Schlumberger Schlumberger is a melting pot of employees from all around the world.
Schlumberger is a melting pot of employees from all around the world. They come from more than one hundred different countries and often work outside their own country. Caroline from Ghana, for example, works in Stavanger, Norway. Caroline Johnson is a Field Engineer. She worked for one year in Ghana after graduating before moving to the oil nation, Norway. She is a good example of the diversity within Schlumberger which is made up of people of different genders, ages and cultures. What does your work involve? – I am often offshore on different rigs and I seldom work in the office. When we are drilling for oil, our duties involve measuring things such as the resistance, density and porosity of rock formations being drilled. These measurements have to be logged and form the basis for an analysis of the presence/absence of hydrocarbons (oil and gas). My task is to prepare and program the measurement and logging tools to be used and then obtain and process the measurements, presenting them so that they can be used to interpret the properties of the rocks drilled. My title is MWD/LWD engineer, which means measurement while drilling and logging while drilling. Why is diversity important? – When the diversity within a company is as broad and varied as within Schlumberger, you meet people from different countries and cultures on a daily basis. This often means that we have different ways of seeing solutions and we can help develop Schlumberger as a company and the individual employee as a person. We get a much broader understanding of the world we live in and see things happening around us in a broader perspective. What can you add to the diversity of the company? – I’ve learnt to complete the projects I participate in, in the best possible way. Sometimes people might think that I am a bit obsessive about details, but it’s the sum of good details that creates the perfect whole! I am very ambitious and always want to do my part so that the completion of a task is as close to perfection as possible. But, naturally, it’s up to the team to agree on when something is good enough. This helps us learn what it means to be tolerant of how other people view every single project, and this really is one of Schlumberger’s strengths. Do you travel a lot? – Yes I do travel a lot. I haven’t got my own office; instead I work in a common room when I’m on land. It’s the nature of the job for me to travel a lot and this also creates variety in my work. I work on different rigs in Norway and the rest of the world, and I meet lots of different people. The oil industry is still dominated by men, but Schlumberger is working hard and purposefully to encourage women to enter and grow in the industry. The company wants to safeguard the diversity that Schlumberger finds so important.
